Chapter 9 Winning

True joy in life comes from struggling against opposition and finally achieving a hard won goal that is valued and cherished.

If we are given something or it is too easy to achieve we do not value it properly and take it for granted. Only those things that we struggle and fight for hold a lasting value to us.

This is equally true in personal relationships. It is hard work to maintain a healthy relationship with someone else. It requires continuous effort.

Nothing in life stays the same, everything is changing. In our relationships with others we are either growing closer together or we are growing farther apart. It is not right to take for granted that the closeness we feel today for someone will be there tomorrow. It is not right to take a relationship for granted.

Relationships are dynamic and the greatest challenge in our lives. They are also the greatest potential for joy in our lives.

There is a great difference between winning a friend and keeping a friend. There is also a great difference between winning a goal and keeping a goal.

Winning is a very important concept to understand. We must strive to win in life. Only in winning do we find the satisfaction we crave.

In contrast there is no shame in loosing if we have truly tried our best. It is vital that whatever we decide to do, we do it well and to the best of our ability. There is no room in life for half-hearted attempts. If we do to the best of our ability we will win. The outcome doesn't even matter.

Even in nature each blade of grass struggles and extends its roots against its neighbors for the nutrients in the soil and reaches upward for the life giving rays of the sun. This is not an act of hatred or malice toward its neighbors but an act of life and of joy.

There is a natural hierarchy in nature and those life forms with the greatest ability to adapt offer the most to each individual species and rise within the hierarchy.

The blade of grass that out competes its neighbors grows stronger and taller and through reproduction disseminates its genetic structure throughout the species. In the same manner the blade of grass that grows in soil where nothing else can grow expands the range of the physical environment where grass can grow. Through reproduction it too disseminates successful adaptive genetic qualities that allow the species to live under varying physical environments.

What of the mediocre blades of grass that are subdued and only manage to hold their own in a stagnant manner? They too are successful. Each blade of grass exists in an environment that is slightly different from its neighbors.

The conditions it faces are unique and contribute to the survival of the species. The blade of grass that dies in a harsh or unfavorable environment or dies because it is crowded out by other blades of grass does not die in vain.

It has tried to exist with every bit of vitality and life available to it and the manner of its struggle is also passed on to the species. In its death a message is made that life can not exist under these conditions. The species then tends to avoid those and similar conditions that are harmful to it.

A simple blade of grass is not able to try in a half-hearted manner. By its very nature it gives in life all that it is capable of giving. Each plant performs a valuable function not only to its own species but in the releasing of oxygen contributes to our own lives as well.

In a like manner the human race has a duty to itself and to the rest of the world to do the best it can. It has a duty to try to win in life and through winning make the world a better place for every living thing. There is also a natural hierarchy within the human race.

There are those that rise to the top by crowding out their neighbors. There are also those that rise to the top by expanding our physical world through individual discoveries and products.

If there is fault to blame within the human race it is not in these people but in those that refuse to try, those that can't even summon the strength for a half-hearted attempt at living. Still even those serve a purpose. The added burden they inflict on society has the effect of bringing out even greater effort on the parts of those that are able.

We all serve a valuable purpose if we intend it or not. Each of us has our proper place within the hierarchy of the human race and each of us will achieve that proper place. In fact we already have. Each one of us is in our proper place within the hierarchy of humanity right now.

If we don't like the position we currently hold we are always able to win a better position through personal struggle. Our position in life is determined by our effort and by our productivity and not by right of birth.

Those in positions of power through chance or birth can not withstand the advances of those that struggle for a better world through personal effort. Life is dynamic and each position within the hierarchy is open to the competitive newcomer. It is always possible to win a better life. It is also possible to lose your position in life to someone that is more qualified, someone that puts out more effort.

At first we don't know how to get the things we want in life. We have no experience and our "computer program" doesn't include the proper steps for us to take. We can only work within our programming and our programming doesn't include how to attain our goal.

All we have in the beginning is a strong desire to achieve our goal. As we hold this desire within us it gradually gains strength and will subconsciously lead us toward ways of achieving our goal.
This subconscious behavior occurs during the development of spiritual energies within us. Our longing takes on the importance of a spiritual quest. The development of spiritual energies is passive and we don't realize any volition on our part.

One day apparently by accident we talk to someone or see a book about our goal. Our goal has found us; we have not found our goal.

This spiritual longing develops into a mental study of how to achieve our goal. We become aware of behaviors and activities that will lead us toward our goal. We also become aware of behaviors that lead us away from our goal.

We learn as much as we can about the achievement of our goal from as many sources as possible. At a critical point we attempt to put into our own words and understanding those things we have learned from outside sources. We attempt to make this knowledge our own, individually suited to our personal situation in life.

We attempt to plan a course of action that will allow us to achieve our goal. The time will come when mental thinking is not enough. We will have enough confidence in our plan that
our emotions will force us to take risks in a beginner fashion.

As beginners we try in our first attempts to achieve our goal and discover that the achievement of the goal is not as easy as we had first thought. Things are much more complex. In our efforts we are achieving first hand experience relating both to our personal situation and toward the achievement of our goal.

Only pure desire and truly wanting to win will give us the emotional energy to physically go onward in spite of personal fears, lead feet, weak knees and get through this difficult novice stage.

Winning is a learning process and a cycle. We go from awkward beginner to basic familiarity to high competence in the area of winning our goal.

Each step or stage must take place as an easy gradient. We must set a realistic goal for ourselves within a realistic time frame.

The final end result is always the same. That which is truly earned gives more joy and satisfaction than that which is no challenge at all. We enjoy challenges to the extent that we can solve the challenges.

When we are confronted by a challenge that is too big for us it can shatter our lives. We must be able to break any challenge up into small goals that are achievable. When we do this any goal is achievable. When we do this we can win.

Chapter 8-Social Pressure

In a way the human race is a single organism. You and I are a small part of the body of humanity. This single organism or collective is greater than any single individual and always will be.

Even as our toes, fingers and eyes serve us, we in turn serve humanity. We feel we have the right to use our toes, fingers and eyes for our own purposes. In the same manner society feels it has the right to use us for its own purposes.

Even as we are more powerful than our toes, fingers and eyes, society is more powerful than we are. In an open dispute with society we as individuals can never win. The best we can ever hope for is a win-win situation in which we win and society also wins.

We don't need to give up our dreams and goals in life. We do need to make those dreams and goals compatible and congruent with what society expects of us.

When we believe society's wishes for us are in conflict with our own goals our thinking is too restrictive and narrow. We will not achieve our goals in direct opposition to society's wishes, never. If a conflict exists it is our thinking that must be altered. There is always a solution that benefits both society and us if we can only find it.

The trick is to never directly oppose society in open conflict because we can never win. When we disagree we can establish boundaries of non-action and take a defensive position. A defensive position requires less energy than an offensive position. This stance is of conscientious objectors that refuse to act physically in a way they feel is destructive.

If society says we must act in a certain way and tries to force us into those actions we have two choices. The first choice is to do nothing. We can alter our personal lives in such a way we are not in open defiance of the directive but in a way we are not in compliance either. This is a passive-aggressive position and will result in a stand-off or stalemate in which neither side wins.

As time goes on the pressures of this unresolved conflict will grow more and more serious. The consequences of continued non-compliance will also grow more severe. The ability of society to enforce the directive will decrease as time goes on. If we can resist long enough a solution will present itself that is favorable to us and agreeable to society. This solution will only come if it is forced through non-compliance and non-action.

During the days of prohibition the manufacture and consumption of alcohol were against the law. This law was not enforceable. Some people acted in open defiance of the law and others altered their life styles in a way that was not in open defiance. Some people made their own alcoholic beverages and kept it quiet. What they made was for their own personal consumption. They did not try to sell or market the product to the public. These people were for the most part ignored by those trying to enforce the law.

Law enforcement was directed at those individuals in open defiance of the law. They were after the bootleggers. They were after the ones that tried to sell directly to the public.

Many people suffered as attempts to enforce this law were made. Many good people lost their lives because of the enforcement of this law. It was finally realized this law was not enforceable and it was repealed.

To rebel and fight openly against society places one outside the law. It makes them criminals in the eyes of society. There is an invisible line that must never be crossed. If the line is crossed the person becomes an outlaw and will never be able to regain the support of society.

The person that rebels in open defiance of society's directives runs the risk of crossing that line. The person that uses non-action and quiet defiance does not run that risk. This is the power of the passive-aggressive position.

A passive-aggressive position is powerful when dealing with social pressures but is not effective in dealing with individuals. A passive-aggressive position taken with individuals will increase the likelihood of more struggle and personal abuse. It will weaken our position in life.

A confrontational and openly defiant position is powerful in dealing with individuals but not in dealing with society. Each time we successfully confront situations and individuals about personal concerns we become empowered through those actions. Each time we act in open defiance of social directives our position is weakened.

This may sound cruel and heartless but let others act in open defiance of unjust laws and social pressures. Let others prove to society the laws are unjust and un-enforceable. Do not become involved because it will severely weaken your position in life and your ability to attain your goals.

In the same manner never use passive-aggressive behaviors when dealing with individuals. Never allow someone to make a decision that should have been yours to make. Never give away your power to another individual and expect that individual to use that power in your own best interests. Confront each situation squarely and consistently as it arises.

Your disagreements with society and its social pressures should retain a hazy and nebulous quality that will prevent society from making an example out of you by centering all of its negative force on you as an individual. Deliberately draw those situations out indefinitely because you can not win. With the passing of time your position will become stronger when the situation is finally forced into a resolution. It will at some point be forced into a resolution.

Disagreements with individuals should be clear and definite. Each person should know exactly where the other stands. Each personal conflict should be resolved as soon as it is humanly possible. The longer interpersonal disagreements last the more personal energy and power you lose. With the passing of time your position is weakened and respect is lost.

Self esteem and respect for each individual are maintained at their highest when difficulties are confronted as soon as possible. Respect and self esteem are lost when unsatisfactory conditions are allowed to exist for any length of time.

You should be able to alter your behavior and use the techniques appropriate for your personal position at any given time.

The support of society is tremendous when taken advantage of and should not be lightly thrown away or ignored. Social approval, popularity and fame are bestowed on those that have harmonized personal goals with society's goals.

In all cases we are rewarded for appropriate behavior and punished for inappropriate behavior. There are social consequences to every action in our lives.

We must learn to do what works and give up doing what doesn't work. We must fit into our social structure in a harmonious way that is a win-win situation. We must realize society is stronger than we are. Only then can we adjust our behavior in ways that will still achieve our goals but not make us outlaws.

We must strive to do this while retaining personal self esteem and respect for the individual rights of others. When we do this society also benefits. Society gradually rewards us with positions of increasing influence and our ability to achieve personal goals gradually increases. In this manner everyone wins and everyone remains true to their own inner nature. Everyone remains honest and true to both personal values and social values.

When we do this we will gradually be given our true and proper place within the body of humanity whether it be toes, fingers or eyes.

Chapter 7 Do It!

Taking physical action is the most powerful thing we can do in life. It is the most powerful thing we can do to achieve our goals and at the same time the most powerful thing we can do to avoid achieving our goals. Physical action always brings some type of physical result.

It is vitally important our physical actions be appropriate and supportive of our personal goals. We must never act blindly or be forced into taking inappropriate actions.

When we are overpowered and forced against our wills into some action we should never give in. Each day our resistance must be as real as the day before even if each day we are forced to do things that are not right or things we don’t like to do.

The danger lies in giving up and with no resistance cooperating and persisting in actions that lead to our own destruction. When we give up we will persist in doing the wrong actions even when we are not forced into doing them. Our continued self esteem requires that our resistance be renewed each day no matter how badly we were beaten yesterday.

If a person decides to quit smoking or any other destructive habit he or she is working against a destructive aspect of his or her inner self. The required action is the same. Never give up no matter how many times we fail. Begin each day with a new resolve and eventually we will gain physical control over the destructive habit. We must persist in our efforts to achieve success.

The personal failures do not count. Each new resolve is accumulative and deals a blow to that destructive aspect controlling the negative action. Each new resolve increases our self esteem. It is the continued resolve to alter our behavior that will eventually win against all odds.

The only way to develop self esteem is through continued resolve to do actions that are personally right for us. Self esteem means to feel good about who we are and what our physical actions are. Self esteem is the knowledge we as individuals have the right and ability to get the things we want in life.

When we give up our self esteem is seriously wounded and we hate ourselves for our inability to act in a proper manner. When we give up we create wounds that never heal. These wounds drain our vitality and belief in ourselves. These wounds continue to destroy our vitality until we come back and finish whatever task we failed at.

In the face of crushing defeat physical reality is trying to tell us something and we should listen. It is not saying we can’t win. Instead it is saying we can’t win by continuing our present course of action. Crushing defeat tells us we are overlooking something extremely important. We must discover what we are overlooking so we can try again more effectively.

Crushing defeat is a useful tool in discovering actions that can be eliminated as unworkable. When one approach doesn’t work we don’t try the same approach next time. We always use what we have learned from past failures in the selection of a new course of action. We learn from our past mistakes and never repeat the same mistake twice.

The ability to persist is one of the greatest abilities a person can have. Without the ability to persist no goals will ever be reached. Thus the most important physical action is persistence toward a desired goal.

In addition to persistence curiosity helps us achieve our goals. We should always encourage curiosity in ourselves and in others. To be curious is to be interested in our environment. This means to be more aware of the physical conditions that surround us. Through curiosity we learn about the object of our interest.

Often curiosity can get us into trouble or place us in unfamiliar or uncomfortable situations. These situations often require creative solutions and expand our options and experiences in life. Curiosity is a powerful way to work toward our goals.

Persistence is a gut level determination to achieve the desired goal at any cost. Curiosity is an emotional interest in a desired goal. It is not as strong as persistence but still a valuable tool. Personal goals in life should be those goals we are curious about and have the persistence to achieve. Curiosity has ties to joy and to the creative urge.

Risk taking should include elements of both curiosity and persistence if it is to succeed.
When we persist in actions that hold no desire for us we are killing ourselves. When we persist in actions that hold no interest for us we are killing ourselves. Our persistence must be directed toward things we wish and not toward things we don’t wish.

If we do the same physical actions today that we did yesterday we will get the same physical results tomorrow that we experienced today. Only by changing our physical actions in the present can we hope to change the physical conditions of our future.

Only by being curious about new things will we be drawn into new physical activities. Physical activities undertaken through curiosity bring us to the life we wish if we persist.

Each day we must do something no matter how small, something we are curious about and enjoy doing. We must create the time we need for this physical activity. Each small effort is accumulative and will lead us into the physical reality we wish to someday experience.

Mental and spiritual work will not alter our physical environment. This type of work is passive. Mental and spiritual work will alter our awareness of our physical environment. Our awareness will change, the world will not.

Mental and spiritual work allows us to adapt to a reality we can not change. Physical and emotional work allows us to change our environment into the reality we wish to experience. We must do each type of work and strive to integrate the results.

We must change those physical elements within our power to change and adapt to those physical elements we can not change. Too often people will concentrate on spiritual and mental work without the balance of emotional and physical work. These people never achieve the physical goals in life they want. They are so heavenly bound they are no earthly good.

Others ignore spiritual and mental work and experience defeat after defeat because they are attempting something that is not physically possible to achieve. These people are living in a fantasy world not related to reality and never will be.

It is important each day some persistent physical effort is devoted to achieving a physical goal and also devoted toward the satisfaction of some curiosity and interest. This physical effort is in addition to those physical efforts directed toward spiritual and mental growth. If there is something that we wish to experience in life we must DO IT!

Chapter 6-Self Esteem

Good self esteem is vital in life. Without it we remain victims and unable to achieve the things we really want. When we feel good about ourselves it is easier to feel good about others too.
In my personal opinion there are three supreme goals we should strive for in life. If we can reach a competency level in each area we will have a healthy self esteem. Competency in these three areas will do more toward spiritual, emotional, mental and physical health than any other goals we may pursue. That does not mean these goals are easily achieved.

The first goal is completion of a basic first aid or paramedic course. Some type of course that trains a person in dealing with medical emergencies. There is no feeling worse than standing by helpless when someone else is dying or in desperate need of emergency medical attention.
One of my children once choked on an ice cube. She was turning blue and couldn't breathe. I remember mechanically picking her up, slapping her on the back to dislodge the object and reaching down her throat to scoop out the ice cube. What can I say? What if I had been unable to do anything and remained frozen with fear?

I drove into my parents yard one day and my father was giving CPR to my uncle on the steps leading into our house. He had been doing CPR for fifteen minutes until the paramedics arrived. My uncle died that day on our doorstep. What if my father had not tried to keep him alive with CPR? In times of emergencies if something can be done it must be done.

Many places offer basic first aid courses throughout the year. EMT training is also available but takes a little longer. As a goal in life EMT training should be attainable by almost anyone. The reward may be much more than self esteem. You may use that knowledge to save the life of someone you love.

The second lifetime goal should be to acquire survival skills. This means the ability to stay alive in survival conditions. Having the ability to swim is an example. The ability to find or create shelter from the elements and start a campfire is another.

Other obvious examples would be knowing what to do when you are lost or when you need to go someplace for help.

These are all skills that are easily attainable through local courses almost anywhere. They aid tremendously in developing confidence and self esteem.

Those that wish to master these skills could learn how to live off the land for days at a time. Courses are also taught on how to find food in nature and how to create emergency shelters. Sure this type of training is difficult. But remember we are talking about lifetime goals here.

Many things can be learned and experienced a little at a time and not all at once.
Survival skills are learned by physically going through the actions required and not by intellectual knowledge. The physical body needs to be taught step by step by actually going through the motions and experiences.

Hiking, camping, rock climbing, and any outdoor sport can be valuable in providing this survival type experience. The more experience we have the better our survival ability becomes and the better we feel about ourselves.

In acquiring these skills we know with conviction that we can take care of ourselves and those we love in emergencies. This knowledge is very empowering and helps us to believe in ourselves. It helps us to reach out with confidence for those things we want in life for both ourselves and for those we love.

The third life time goal is the ability for self defense. The ability to defend ourselves or our loved ones is vital to our well being. This does not mean picking a fight with someone. It means that you don't have to back down or run just because someone threatens you or a loved one with physical violence.

The sad truth is that we may have our hard earned goal within our hands and through threat of force or violence someone can take it away from us. There are people that prey upon weaker people and take advantage of the weakness of their victims.

The ability for self defense is a mind set as well as a physical skill. We have been brain washed into thinking it is better to offer no resistance when confronted by force or threat of force. This applies equally to the rules, regulations and laws that strangle our personal freedoms at an ever increasing rate. We are told it is the law, we must not resist. Increasingly there are frivolous laws being passed that infringe on our personal freedoms. Some of these laws are blatantly unconstitutional and revoked by the Supreme Court. Others have not yet been ruled upon by the Supreme Court.

Whether it is a physical assault upon your person or a legal assault on your individual rights there is a line that must be drawn. There must be a point where a person says "I will take no more abuse. This type of abuse must stop and it must stop here and now."

We must refuse to be victims. When we are victims we suffer, our loved ones suffer, our community suffers, our nation suffers and the entire human race suffers. When we stand up to defend ourselves and our loved ones we are no longer victims regardless of the outcome of the situation. We have at least done something, taken what action we could to make the situation right.

Someone must be the first to stand up and fight back. Why must it always be the other person that fights for the injustice in our world? Why can’t it once in a while be us?

These are the three important lifetime goals I believe will do the most to develop self esteem within a person. There are other smaller goals that will assist this process.

We must have at least one skill, one thing we are good at, one thing others will come to us to learn about. There must be at least one thing we are known and respected for. We must be good at this one personal skill to have a healthy self esteem.

We must find that one thing and hone it to perfection. We must become highly competent at this one physical skill whatever it is. Each individual is unique. Some things appeal to one person and not to another. We each have certain things we find easy to do and other things we find difficult to do.

In the beginning it is vital we become highly skilled at what we find easy to do even if we are not that interested in doing it. Each small success is accumulative and will lead us through the clumsy, awkward stage into proficiency and finally into professional level competency. We must become familiar with both the awkwardness of the beginner and the competence of the professional.

When we understand the cycle we no longer fear the awkward stage of being a beginner because we know that as we gain experience it will become easier. Too many people refuse to do new things in life because they are afraid of looking foolish and awkward in front of others. These same people have probably never reached true competence in a skill and don't understand how the learning cycle really works.

By achieving professional level competence in those areas that are easy for us, we become able to recognize those same stages of competency as we try gaining skills that are not so easy. When we have succeeded in one area we know success is possible and we know what it feels like. We are able to recognize it in other areas. We have physical knowledge of what it is like.

Each person should eventually acquire many skills at the professional level. They should acquire not only easily developed skills but at least one extremely difficult skill.

It will require hard grueling effort against terrible resistance to prepare us for self mastery of our physical lives and our physical world. In fact, the only way to achieve mastery of our physical lives is by mastering one physical skill at a time.

Mastery comes when one looks back at a wide range of hard won efforts and skills and realizes that compared to many other people his or her life is relatively problem free. This person is able to realize that he or she is free.

Chapter 5B-Creative Power

The next level is illustrated by the concept of a Zen koan. A Zen master may ask a pupil, "What do an ice cube, a stop sign and your mother-in-law all have in common?"

There is only one correct answer and it is highly personal and individual. You will feel the correctness of the solution deep in your soul when you find it.

The student or disciple may spend days, months or even years pondering this question. Whenever he approaches the master with a possible solution the master merely says, "That is not the correct solution, try harder."

After perhaps two years the student runs up to the master laughing and with tears in his eyes. He is overcome with emotion and radiates intense excitement.

"I know the answer," he shouts. "Whenever I see my mother-in-law she stops me cold!"

The master congratulates the student and then gives him another more difficult koan. With each success the student is able to find the correct answer more easily and swiftly. Of course the correct answer is always individual and personal but the master and student both can tell when the answer is the correct one by the emotional rightness it has.

This is a very high degree of problem solving where only a few simple words are used as a key to unlock the creative power within us. As before each effort builds upon the successes of previous efforts. With experience the difficulty goes away and the solution readily appears.

The highest level of creative problem solving is when a person blanks their mind and deliberately tries to be open to all possibilities. They reject "possible" solutions because they are familiar with the euphoria and inner joy that comes from the truly "correct" solution.

The exciting news is that this level of creative ability can be developed by anyone with practice and hard work. But they must first master the lower levels of creative problem solving.
Mastery of each of the lower levels is an important and easy way to get a great number of personal successes under one's belt. This assists in strengthening personal confidence and self-esteem.

The creative ability is like a muscle that must be flexed many times for it to grow strong. It is like dissolving salt in a glass of water. You can add more and more salt and nothing happens. At a critical point the water can contain no more salt and the salt crystallizes out of the water.

In the same manner when we focus our attention fully on our problem and give it our energy and effort a point will eventually be reached where the proper solution crystallizes into our awareness. With experience we become familiar with the process and it becomes easier and swifter to accomplish. Each success makes the next one easier and we learn to trust ourselves more.

In time our ability to focus and generate this creative energy can become spontaneous and happen without effort on our part. It is at this point we are competent and resilient in life. Our ability to deal with life becomes an enjoyable challenge and not a burden. We actually look forward to the next challenge from the unknown.

Chapter 5A-Creative Power

Crippling depression comes when we can't find any way out of a bad situation. We feel trapped and helpless. Each of us is doing the best we can in life. We each act in accordance to what we have learned through past experiences and in accordance with our current beliefs.

No matter how successful we are things will occasionally erupt in our faces and attempt to smash us. There is always a creative solution to even the worst situation. In the very worst situation it may cost us our life. Still, it is always possible to find a way to die with honor and self-esteem intact.

I recently read a novel that dealt with the horrors of Alzheimer's and Huntington's disease. I was deeply moved as I read about these diseases. I know some people that suffer from Alzheimer's but I did not know how badly they and those they loved suffered.

In the novel, one person in a lucid moment beat the disease through suicide. He was able to die with dignity at the moment of his choice and under his terms. The novel still haunts me. Why should our world be this way?

True genius and creativity come from developing the ability to discover and use solutions previously unknown or unrecognized. Every situation has a solution, it is up to us to find that solution and discard those that are not acceptable.

We must train ourselves in the ability to find these solutions. This training helps us to be resourceful and adept at dealing with recurring crisis situations. In time crisis situations are no longer emotionally crippling to us. We gain the ability to deal with them rationally and competently.

The key to finding creative solutions is to take ourselves out of the situation and perceive it differently. We must change our way of looking at the situation because our normal way offers no solution.

We do this naturally when we ask ourselves, "What would Dad do in this situation, what would Mom do? What would John Wayne or Clint Eastwood do?"

We try to see the situation from the eyes and viewpoint of someone we respect. A draw back of this approach is that it involves admitting our own inability to deal with the situation. It reinforces the weakness of our own chosen belief system.

As strange as it sounds, the use of divinatory devices such as horoscopes, fortune cookies, Tarot cards and daily prayer books are more effective.

These devices are more effective because they give information that is so vague and general we must generate creative energy to make the information even apply to us.

"How in the world can that ever apply to me?"

After a few minutes of thought we arrive at possible interpretations that could apply to our own situation.

Do you see what is happening? At the last level we approached the problem not as ourselves but as someone else. In this stage we use divinatory devices to get our own creative juices flowing. These devices are crutches or aids and have no power in themselves. At this stage we are able to expand our options in creative ways with the help of these aids.

One of the great enjoyments in life is finding the correct solution to a problem or situation. Eureka! A light bulb goes off in our brain and we are overjoyed.

Most people enjoy horoscopes and other divinatory aids because of the joy of discovering possible interpretations to what would otherwise be nonsense. We enjoy creating meaning out of chaos and discord. At least we do when we are not overwhelmed by chaos and discord.

It is important we try for solutions that are within our ability to resolve. The key is to start at lower levels and not attempt the highest levels until we are familiar with the lower ones.
The next stage is much more rigid and demanding. A writing instructor may tell a student to take a list of 25 words and create a poem or a story containing those words. Likewise a person may spend days, months or years making his or her thoughts conform to a specific pattern.

The art and discipline of pen and ink drawing is an example. The artist is restricted to work in a specific medium and still expected to produce brilliant creative and original work.

This is also the level of active problem solving. Thousands of people enjoy crossword puzzles and other mental challenges simply because of the joy in finding the correct solutions. In addition to added creative power this also develops the analytical and reasoning skills.

As always, the more experience you have in problem solving the greater your ability to find solutions becomes. The more you do, the better you get.
